About

I am Qizhe Xie, an Assistant Professor at National University of Singapore. I spent 2016-2020 at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), receiving my Masters' and PhD from LTI and MLD respectively. My advisor was Eduard Hovy. I worked with Quoc Le and Thang Luong at Google Brain (now Google DeepMind) from 2018 to 2020. I studied at ACM Class of Shanghai Jiao Tong University from 2012 to 2016.

My Chinese name is 谢其哲 (shye-chi-tzeuh). I published papers under Michael Qizhe Shieh for easier pronunciation for non-Mandarin speakers. I prefer using Qizhe Xie now.

Research & Recruitment

Research Directions: We work on LLM research including architecture, evaluation and training objectives. Recently, we have developed an interest in local AI models, which define their own goals and learn from rich experiences.

Prospective Students: Thank you for your interests! Feel free to drop me an email if you want to work together. I may not be able to reply to your emails due to existing work responsibilities and intellectual explorations. Please don't be discouraged if you don't hear back from me. I generally prefer long periods of collaborations and only work with visiting researchers very sparsely. The best way for us to work together is to join the PhD program at School of Computing. The admission is handled by a committee and I have little control over the admission.
